Of the post-rock titans, Sigur Ros is prettier, Mogwai is heavier, Explosions in the Sky is more accessible, but none match the enigmatic darkness of the Canadian collective Godspeed You Black Emperor! On their first album in over a decade, they deliver more swirling, epic songs (2 are around 20 minutes) that conjure up some kind of apocalypse, wrapping them up in cryptic album artwork and titles and an almost cult-like aura. Like "2001," they are easy to respect and hard to love. They are the monolith in "2001."
