Quotes
Add a QuoteCaptain Wentworth (voiceover of his letter to Anne, as she runs searching for him): "Miss Elliot, I can bear this no longer. You pierce my soul. I'm half agony, half hope. Unjust I may have been. Weak and resentful I have been -- but never inconstant. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it eight years ago. I have loved none but you. You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone I think and plan. Have you not seen this? I can hardly write. I must go, uncertain of my fate. A word... A look, would be enough... Only, tell me that I am... Tell me not that I am too late. That such precious feelings are gone forever..."

Add a CommentI loved the book but was disappointed in this portrayal of Anne Elliot. In the book she is much less mousy and unsure of herself. Captain Wentworth and Anne's father are well done.
Disappointing. My view is probably colored by the ending. It has Anne running and running all over Bath looking for Wentworth. Not only does this seem uncharacteristic for a woman of her age and station in life in that period, but it is filmed by a bouncing handheld camera. Then she finds him and the camera spends an inordinate amount of time focused on the lower half of her face. For me, the annoyances completely obscured any emotion the ending might have generated.
I loved it. I thought it was well crafted -- directing, score, cinematography... Sally Hawkins was exceptional. Bravo, BBC/WGBH. FIVE STARS.
Light hearted without any deep thinking
One would never know, from this version of Persuasion, that Miss Austen wrote comic novels. Good cast, just-okay direction, and a clumsy, over-explicit script in which poor Miss Anne must read from her diary. She must also make a scene, chasing a man out of a concert hall. Oh, really? On the positive side, the music and scenery are pretty, and everyone wears his proper headgear and gloves, for the most part.
I agree with zanma's comment - far too short to get all the good stuff in and not the best version. But still, a very good movie. I recommend 1995 movie starring Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds - it is by far the best version out there as it is outstanding!
Hard to decide between this and the 1970 version: both have good points.
I enjoyed this version and i have seen a few different version.
Terrible - by far the worst Persuasion I have seen. Even the 80s BBC overdone stagey version is better than this one which mucks around too much with the story. Better - the Ciaran Hinds, Amanda Root version of the mid-90s. It captures the essence and the feeling of the story superbly
Loved the movie and Jane Austen all over again... besides R Penry-Jones is incredibly handsome! :)
